It comes in 3 forms: as sulphate, as hydrochloride and as N-Acetyl Glucosamine or NAG. NAG is the form in which glucosamine exists as part of the connective tissue. As a supplement it has several advantages over the other forms. After absorption it remains for a long time in the blood to provide a steady supply of glucosamine while the other forms are rapidly metabolised, and up to 50% are converted into glucose for energy. Personal observations have shown excellent success when used for osteoarthritis, especially in combination with MSM (mehtylsulfonylmethane). Medical/scientific research also has shown unexpected benefits with other conditons. In models of auto-immune diseases, NAG normalized T-cell function and prevented development of paralysis in MS and high blood glucose levels in Type 1 diabetes. In Crohn's disease and other inflammatory bowel conditions the body does not produce enough NAG to protect the intestinal wall, and supplements have improved this condition. Dermatologists have also found that topical application of NAG improves UV-damaged and aging skin, and reduces hyperpigmentation and age spots.
